CARS CONVERTED.
YOUNG MAN ARRESTED. JOY RIDE TO HAMILTON. RESULTS IN ROAD SMASH. A mechanic employed by a city garage, Selwyn Theodore Gustafson, aged 19, arrested on charges of unlawfully converting two motor cars, one worth £360 and the other valued at £100, to his own use, appeared at the Police Court this morning, when he pleaded guilty. Chief Detective Hammond said Gustafson, on July 27, took a car which had been left in the garage by a customer and picked up several youug men, and also a quantity of liquor. They drove to Hamilton to attend a dance. On the way down the car, driven by accused, collided with a stationary motor car as the owner was mending a puncture on thp roadside. On ; the journey back to Auckland the. car crashed into a bridge, taking with. it. portion of the side of the bridge. One side of the converted car was also ; ripped-out. The other motor car converted by accused on August 1 was merely driven home by Gustafson when lie went for his tea. On the application of the Chief Detective accused was remanded until August 8 for sentence. ■ , Mr. Hunt refused accused's application for bail.
