PREFERENCE WANTED.
NEW ZEALAND IRON. MINISTERS SYMPATHETIC. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Ironmasters' Association asked the Railways Minister to-day that preference should be shown New Zealand tenderers in bridge construction and similar contracts. Incidentally, it was stated that the New Zealand manufacturer was required to deliver on the scene of the work, whereas outside firms only had to deliver to the port of landing. The Hon. W. B. Taverper said he would bring this before the Minister of Public Works. In regard to the deputation's requests generally, Mr. Taverner was sympathetic. "We want to do all the work we can in New Zealand," he said, "and we are going to do it." In regard to the suggestion that the Department let its own work to tender, the Minister pointed out that it was loaded with its own works and it must make use of them.
