OTAHUHU RHODES SCHOLAR.

AN ENTHUSIASTIC FAREWELL

MEDAL AND CHEQUES PRESENTED

One of the most enthusiastic gatherings ever held in Otahuhu was that tendered to Mr. Ernest Bailey, 1929 Rhodes scholar, by the borough council and residents, prior to his. departure foi England. The Mayor, Mr. T. Clements, presided over a packed house, and on the platform were Professor Patterson, of the Professorial Board of University; Professor Algie, Mr. Bailey's tutor; Bro. Borgia, of the Sacred Heart College; Lieut.-Colonel Northcroft, on behalf oi college cadets; Mr. G. L. McLeod, representing the ex-College Students' Association; Mr. R. of the Law Society, and Mr. R. McElroy, on behalf of law students. The chairman referred to the success of Mr. Bailey in his scholastic career, which was begun at the local St. Joseph's School. He then went to the Sacred Heart College, where he won a scholarship which enabled him to continue his studies at the Auckland University. Otahuhu was proud of the guest of the evening, and the wish was expressed that Mr. Bailey would come back to New Zealand. Professor Patterson congratulated the borough on the manner in which the Rhodes scholar had been farewelled. Mr. R. McVeagh said that he recently had reason to appreciate the scholastic attainment of Mr. Bailey. Bro. Borgia said that he never had a scholar who was so responsive to teaching as Mr. Bailey. The Mayor presented Mr. Bailey with a cheque and read a letter from Bishop Cleary apologising for his absence owing to health reasons, at the same time presenting Mr. Bailey with a cheque for a substantial amount. Replying, Mr. Bailey said that he owed his present position to his parents in the first instance, and secondly to the various teachers from the local school to the University. Mr. R. McElroy presented Mr. Bailey with a cheque from the University students, accompanied by a letter of congratulation and appreciation. Professor Algie referred to the brilliant career of Mr. Bailey and said he hoped to join him in England in the near future. Mrs. Bailey was also presented with a beautiful bouquet on behalf of the ladies of 'the borough. An excellent musical programme was provided by leading musicians from the city. The meeting concluded with the National Anthem, and cheers for the guest's parents.
