HOCKEY TOURISTS
AUSTRALIAN VISITORS.

ELTHAM, Thursday.
The Australian hockey team beat Taranaki at Tanmata Park this afternoon by 3 goals to 2, after a very evenly contested game. The ground was soft from rain.
The pace set by the visitors at the start electrified the spectators, while their combination was good. After about a quarter of an hour's play H. Connie was prominent in taking the ball up the line by high hitting.,. From fast play in front of tho Taranaki goal the Australian forwards tricked the goalkeeper, and Xettleton sent in a nice shot to score.
Toward the end of the speTl H. Cormie centred and Xettleton took the ball up the field. He passed and the ball was returned to him, and he sent it into the net. 2—o. Australia had had the beet of the game, the ball being in their possession a good deal, although Taranaki defended stubbornly.
Taranaki now 'played with great vigour. From a corner hit the Taranaki forwards made a determined rush and pushed the ball into the net from among players on both sides. Rain fell during this spell. The Taranaki goalkeeper, Bennett, made a wonderful save by going clown on his elbow. The crowd applauded him. From a scramble in front of the goal Xettleton sent in a groat shot, the ball finding the back of the net. Australia 3, Taranaki 1.
Immediately after the bullq-off Taranaki retaliated, and S. Betts eent in a Immediately after the bully-off Taranaki were attacking when time sounded without further scoring.
The referees were D. Burgess (Hawera) and L. F. Kent (Auckland).
