FIRST LEAGUE REP. GAME
WAIKATO'S CHALLENGE. BRIGHT PLAY EXPECTED. TWO POWERFUL SIDES. Followers of League football are on ;their toes in anticipation of a keen contest at Carlaw Park to-morrow between tlie South Auckland representative thirteen and the elect of Auckland iu the &!&t representative fixture of the season. The Waikatu men will make a determined bid to capture the Northern Uition Cup, and every effort will be made by the local holders of the trophy to resfet the challenge. For several seasons Soittth Auckland invasions have been regarded as the most serious of any that the Auckland reps, have had to face, and there> is good ground for the belief, as in 1023 tliey actually defeated Auckland's best, a-nd later withstood a challenge by
them. On paper the visitors look a side that should tattle, if not actually defeat, the home thirteen. The majority of them figured in the successful 1923 side, while Timms and Menzies represented New Zealand Jast season. The former is an inspiration to any pack, and is recognised as one of the best ruckmen in the code. The backs arc a solid set. They are noted for their defensive qualities rather than their brilliance on attack, and 6hould be capable of ho'.Jing the more speedy Auckland rear divisior.. The Auckland team is well-known, and probably Use strongest thirteen it is possible to Aeld. Though their training has been somewhat restricted, they should, nevertheless, develop combination that is baffling to the opposition and thrilling for the spectators. Of the backs all' witli. the exception of Simons and Seagar hawe played in big football, and their inclusion is justified in view of their consistency throughout the season. Literally both t*e Devouport men have played "their way into the team, and they should give- .good accounts or themselves in the higher flights of League. Shortland, the ex-Maori Rugby All Black, has been Aosen to play behind the pack in preference to Mclntyre, his form in hie two appearances at headquarters upsetting- earlier calculations as to who the rep, lalf would be. The forwards are a hefty and clever lot, who combine with their backs at every opportunity. The eextet includes several new faces. Owing to the similarity of the teams colours, Auckland players will appear in red and white jerseys. The curtainraiser to the big attraction will be provided by the Auckland and South Auckland junior representatives, and should aleo give the spectators interesting football.
