TELEGRAPHIC CHESS.

AUCKLAND V. WELLINGTON

Play in the Auckland-Wellington telegraphic chess match was continued last Saturday evening. Players were a little late starting, and almost immediately a breakdown in the line caused considerable delay, while frequent interruptions through carelessness on the part of some players in both teams further retarded play. Ten out of the twenty games .vere completed; nine will have to go to adjudication unless the two captains can come to some agreement. Meßae, playing for Wellington at board nine, is in Auckland, and will continue his game with Lees next Friday evening. In the completed games Fotheringliam beat Wigham, Stevens beat Kelling, Ogle beat Purchas, Jones lost to Gyles, Grierson lest to Mason, Jeffreys lost to Fairburn, Adams lost to Sim, Edwards lost to Grady, Good drew with Mackay, Layland drew with Jessup. A casual examination, of the positions in unfinished games suggests that there is a possibility of a close finish, but until the adjudicators have given their decision the final score will not be available.
