SPEED TRIAL

Recent' cables report the result of the 24 hours' trial on the Le Mans circuit (France) in which Wolf Barnato and Birkin, driving a Bentley car, covered 1770 miles, averaging 74 m.pii., and won the Kudge-Whitworth Cup. The Le Mans trial—as it is generally termed in Europe —was instituted in 1903, and is a race for touring cars fully equipped with mudguards, hoods, windscreens, spare tyres, lamps, etc., which have to cover tlic greatest possible mileage m two rounds of the clock. At the start of the race the hoods have to be erected and kept up for 20 laps of the 13-mile course, while at any time, starting the engine is only allowed by using the selfstarter." In all important details of the specification, cars have to be standard models. To merely survive the trying ordeal of this continuous 24 hours' battle on the road is in itself a distinctly creditable performance, for both car and driver.
