SIGNPOSTING.

NATIONAL SYSTEM URGED.

UNIFORMITY WANTED

WORK OF THE A.A.A,

The following is a circular letter sent to county councils and local bodies within the Auckland Automobile Association's territory by the touring manager, Mr. R. A. Champtaloup: —

The association is developing a national system of signposting in conjunction with other associations throughout the North Island. We are anxious that the local bodies should co-operate with us, and I have pleasure in advising that my association is prepared to supply any danger signs which your council is required to erect under the motor regulations.

No charge is made for this service, and if you supply us with a sketch showing the various points where you consider warning's arc necessary in your district I will confer with you and arrange these to suit the sequence of signs in other counties bordering your territory. These signs will then be erected in the ordinary course of the signposting activities of the associaiton. In certain instances, however, local bodies may be able to assist by erecting odd signs in outlying districts.

Signs which we do not supply or erect are: (1) Railway crossing signs; (2) school signs; (3) Speed restriction signs. When the regulations were being drafted certain promises were made to the motoring associations. These were ignored, but we now have the assurance o°f the present Government that the regulations referring to signs will shortly bo amended. In spite of this, I find that local bodies have now been circularised by the Commissioner of Transport, urging them to forward their

requirements, so that a bulk order may be prepared. The object of my association in approaching you is to maintain the continuity and uniformity of signs and to establish one standard of danger through the North Island. Our actual signs will, of course, comply with the regulations. We aim to help the motorist by paying attention only to those corners where there is some acute danger and not to have every side road so placarded that he will come to disregard these signs.
