SCHOOLS SEVERELY DAMAGED

IN NELSON DISTRICT

BOARD PEAISES TEACHERS

(Bv Telegrapn.-Own Correspondent.) NELSON, Monday.

The damage done to the schools in the Nelson Education Board's district is estimated at £5000.

The Westport Primary School and the Waimangaroa School were the most severely damaged. With the exception of these and the schools in the karamea block, 122 chimney stacks will have to be renewed, 01 chimneys to be completely rebuilt, 17 new tanks and 15 stands to be provided. In addition many schools and residences have suffered damage to roofs and spouting, and quite a number of buildings have been badly strained and shifted off their piles.

Apart from the two schools mentioned above, the board has decided that where there is even one pupil ready to attend in any particular school district the schools shall reopen and, in accordance with this policy, by Wednesday next all the schools that have been closed will be open with the exception of those at Newton Flat, where the building was demolished, Mid - Maruia, Glengarry, Katanga, Mangles Valley and Lyell. These are all small schoo's and the districts have been evacuated. The board to-day resolved that a letter be sent to each of the teachers expressing the board's appreciation of the splendid work done by them during the disaster.
