WAIPA WINS.

COUNTRY HOCKEY FINAL.

RODNEY NARROWLY DEFEATED. WHITE HORSE CUP CONTEST. When the Waipa hockey representatives leave for home during the weekend they will take with them the White Horse Cup, the trophy that entitles them to be regarded as the champion country team of the province this season. At Remuera yesterday afternoon Waipa defeated Rodney by the odd goal in seven, and thus preserved their week's unbeaten record. Rodney, as runners-up for the championship, win the Captain White Cup.

The weather was fine, and there was a good crowd of spectators when the teams took the field. Waipa had not been beaten, but two draws had put Rodney two points behind, and a victory in their favour would have ■ necessitated a play-off. Waipa started off in promising style, and it was not long before B. Speirs netted the first goal of the match. Rodney were determined not to go down without a struggle, and for a spell they had Waipa on the defence. Waipa took a turn to look dangerous, but Rodney soon changed the venue, and their efforts, were rewarded when T. Grimmer made the score one all. A series of attacks by Rodney forwards gave Jack, the Waipa goalie, plenty to do, but it was Waipa who jvere able to add to their tally, both Woods and B. Speirs scoring before the change for the second half.

Rodney opened the second spell with a brisk attack, but L. Speirs relieved the danger, and Waipa scored their fourth goal as the result of a line shot by Fincli. At this stage it looked as if Rodney would be soundly beaten, , but they rallied in good style, and T. and J. (Jri r tor scored goals. With only one ;oal between the teams, the play was sternly contested. The game swung up and down field, but the defence of both sides stood the test until the final whistle. Waipa, 4; Rodney, 3. Other White Horse Cup games resulted: Whangarei, 4 (Munro 2, McAllister 1, McKenzie 1), Whakatane, 0; Thames-Hauraki, 2 (H. Candy 1, Menzies 1), Maniapoto, 0.
