GOLD OR GRASS?

IDLE MINING AREAS.

A WAIHI PROBLEM,

DEPUTATION TO WARDEN.

(By Telegraph.-—Own Correspondent.)

WAIHI, this day,

A deputation representing the Wailii Borough Council interviewed the warden, Mr. F. \Y. .Platts, this morning relative to the question of mining district occupation lease titles for agricultural leases over abandoned residence sites and areas held by mining companies as special sites and not now required.

The Mayor suggested that the time had arrived when such areas would be much better under cultivation thai standing idle. He instanced scvera areas in the town which could be takei up as suggested.

Mr. Hazard, borough engineer, said the restricted area had been observed years back in regard to granting these titles within the borough, but times had

changed, and it would benefit the town to have those abandoned areas settled.

Mr. 11. W. Hopkins, representing the Wailii Gold Mining Company, said there would be no objection to granting titles over special sites provided fliey were not required for mining purposes.

The warden agreed that if applications were taken on their merits and were approved by mining companies interested and by the mining inspector, he would facilitate occupation of these areas in every way possible.

The Mayor thanked the warden for his consideration.
