MANUKAU COUNTY.

MEETING 0? COUNCIL

DRAINAGE SCHEME FOR MAXGERE EAST.

The Manukau County Council met today, Mr. F. M. Waters presiding. It was reported that during the mouth QlO drivers'" licenses had been issued and 36 new drivers tested, these figures being in excess of those for last year.

The Public Works Department advised ;hat £1490 had been credited to the coun:ii for allocation, to the following works:

Walsh's Road, £300: Clifton Road, £36; Old Whitford Road, £42: Bucklands Beach. Road. £111: Papakura _ stream bridge, £600: Great South Road, for sealing of shoulders, £400. Building progress was well maintained during the past month, according to the report of the inspector (Mr. C. Clark) who stated that twenty-eight permits were issued for new buildings, alterations, addi-t-ions. etc., to the total value or £i 664. The ij:mre tras made tip as lollops:—llanjrcrc riding, -x o<s~ro j 3?o.j£"QrcLri;rri. Papakura. £104o; Papatoetoe, £174/; and Wairoa, £638. Five cases of infections diseases were reported, one each of diphtheria. T. 8.. pneumonic influenza and two ox scarlet fever. Consideration of a sewerage scheme for Hangere East was urged by Mr. Clark, as sections in that locality are totally incapable of dealing with house waste drainage. and the effluents from septic tanks for any long period. The sewerage for the district could be dealt with by linking j up with the Otahuhu system, or, as the railway workshops had been refused permission to empty into the Manukau Har- j bour. by taking it through the back of King's College, on the Middle-more estate, where a fall could be obtained, without I a pumping system, and thence on to the! Panmure River, providing the Harbour | Board consented. 1 It was considered that a general drain- j age scheme was premature at the moment, but a committee was set up to attend to immediate sewerage needs at Mangere East. Engineer's Report. The engineer (llr. -J. R. Page'i reported upon the satisfactory erection of the Papakura stream bridge on the Great South Road, the decking having been partly laid on the structure. The metalling and bituminising of shoulders on the main highway had been carried on as expeditiously as weather conditions would permit, and approximately two-thirds of the work had been completed. The survey of the Panmure-Ho wick main highway I with a view to concrete paving was well! advanced, while the deviation on the j Buckland's Beach Road had been brought j into regular use. The Public Warks De- j partment had established a camp on the j Clevedon-Brookby Road and placed some j "20 to '25 men at work widening the stretch j under an unemployment relief scheme. In the Papatoetoe riding Guy's Bridge had been completed and extensive maintenance, and general improvement work carried out. It was proposed to apply for a sum to be voted for the reconstruction of a small concrete bridge between Whitford and Brookby when estimates for construction work on the Howic-k-ilanurewa highway were being compiled. A survey had been made and estimates were being prepared for a storm water drainage system along the main road through Clevedon township. The principal objects of the work were to dispose of water which becomes stagnant under present conditions, .reduce the excessive camber of the road, and to trim up footpaths.
