TOURING MANAGER'S REPORT.

VAUIOUS ACTIVITIES

THE SOUTHERN TOUR. Following is a report from the touring manager of the Auckland Automobile Association on activities la the touring and signs department: — Since the last council meeting. Patrol Yates has received his annual leave and (luring the balance of the time has signposted the C'oromandel Peninsula, carried out revision and maintenance on the Pokeno-Paeroa-Katikati Road, has erected signs between Waiuku and the Manukau Heads and has paid attention to the sign by the Grafton Bridge. It has been necessary for Mr. Skow to accompany Patrol Yates on the work at Grafton Bridge, which had to be carried out after midnight when the trams stop running. Mr. Skow has been occupied with the inspection of several districts and has attended to signs, maintenance on the Hauraki Plains. He covered various areas in the Franklin district and brought back sketches from which orders were prepared for signs. He also covered the two roads to Helensville and reported on the condition of the Lincoln Road. During the Waikato show, he was in attendance on the King's Birthday and answered many inquiries by members. Mr. Skow also conveyed members of the council to Pukekohe for the meeting of the agency last week. The general map and guide work is well in hand, and I have every hope that there will be no undue rush for the coming season's publications. Residents in the Taupo district have approached me to publish a map of their district and as I find that support is forthcoming from the various business people-, I suggest that I be authorised to publish a map comprising the country from the Aratiatia Rapids, near Wairakei, to the Poutu Bridge, south of Tokaanu. It is proposed that this map shall take the form of our Rotorua publication and besides containing a description and the location of the various points of scenic interest, will also, embody all the fishing streams and pools. A reference to the facilities available at various sites and a short resume of the Maori fighting in the district will be included. Signposting Services. In travelling throughout the North Island, I feel the urgent need of more co-operation in the signposting schemes of the various automobile associations and I suggest that one representative from each association should meet to confer to lay down a general scheme for the whole of the North Island. I then suggest that the various service officers who are being appointed in the south should meet me for instruction in the general principles of signposting and instructions as laid down by the conference I suggest. On my forthcoming trip to Gisborne I have a certain amount of territory to cover around Napier and have agreed with t,he Hawke's Bay Automobile Association that their newly appointed service officer sliould accompany me for a day. Trips of this sort certainly help, but I feel that some organised action is necessary in the interest of the touring motorist. Meetings of members in Whangarei and Dargaville will be held shortly at the time when I have to go north to confer with the engineer of the Bay of Islands County Council with regard to danger signs on the main highways in the Bay of Islands county. At the same time, I will endeavour to arrange a meeting of motorists at Kawakawa and appoint an agent and enrol whatever members areavailable. Agency meetings will also shortly tie conducted at Huntly, Ngaruawahia, Hamilton, Te Awamutu and Otorohanga.
