WORK OX MAIN" HIGHWAYS

TE AROHA, Monday

Mr. W. R. Lowry presided at the monthly meeting -of the Piako County i Council held at Te Aroha to-day. The Public Works Department wrote in regard to the uncompleted state of the Tapuna-Ohinewai main highway between Quarry Road and Waiti Road, and asked that the balance of £266 9/0 be expended so that the entire length of road could be put in order. It was agreed to put the matter in band. The Highways Council wrote stating that the board could not see its way to subsidise further sealing work on the Ngatea-W aliaroa main highway, as a scheme was in view for sealing the section of the Hamilton-Tc Aroha main highway m the Piako county. The chairman reported on a visit to Auckland in regard to the sealing of the main highway from Motumaoho to Te Aroha. J-he chairman was appointed the county lepresentative to the Main Highways Council. A letter was read from the Local Government Loans Board with regard to tile application for sanction to issue a loan for Peeks Road. An objection had been received from Mr. Joseph Warder, of Springdale, and the board asked the council to consider this objection. Mr. Walters explained that the settlers, other than Mr. Werder, wished the road- proceeded with. The latter's property, probably the best in the locality, would also be benefited. It was decided to reply to this effect to the Loans Board. The Highways Council wrote stating the board is prepared to subsidise the cost of strengthening the foundation course of sealing four miles of the Kopu-Ra«lan main hc'iway between Waiharakeke stream and Waitoa River on the basis of £2 to £1, the estimated cost beinf £"14-5 per mile. °
