HEARD IN TARANAKI.
DEEP, MUFFLED EXPLOSIONS.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday.
Heavy explosions, following the earthquake, were heard over a wide area in Taranaki to-day. The explosions were heard a few minutes after the shake in Hawera, Opunake and as far north as Okato, or over an area of 50 square miles. All reports state the reverberations were deep and muffled as if occurring at great distance out at sea, and the direction of the sounds points to the origin being out at sea to the w.ist of Opunake or Cape Egmont. Residents of coastal districts state that the explosions were accompanied by slight tremors and that the sound was heavy enough 'to frighten cattle.
