CONGREGATIONAL UNION.

AUSTRALIAN CONFERENCE

MINISTERS' RETIRING ALLOWANCES.

"Our meetings in Brisbane in connection with the annual reunion of the Congregational Union of Australia and New Zealand held at Brisbane, were most successful and many bright men were gathered together from all the States," said Sir Geo. Fowlds, one of the delegates from the Dominion. The Rev. Lionel Fletcher was also a delegate, but, 011 account of illness in Sydney, was unable to attend, and according to Sir George was very much missed. One of the problems facing the New Zealand delegates, and the strongest reason for Sir Geo. Fowlds' attendance, was the endeavour to secure an amalgamation of ministers' retiring allowances. The idea was to allow the ministers in question to move freely from one State to another and also to New Zealand, if need be, so that they could find a congenial place to settle. At present these ministers have to remain in the place where they receive their retiring allowance. Sir George said the proposed scheme had not been finalised, but an agreement had been reached. This agreement would be put before an actuary who had been authorised to produce a workable scheme which would ultimately make one fund for Australia and New Zealand.
