"AS GOOD AS HOTEL"

IMPROVED SAILORS' HOME.

FINE WORK ACCOMPLISHED.

LACK OF AMUSEMENTS.

"The Home can now compare more than favourably with any other similar institution in the Empire," said Mr. Geo. W. Sanders, president, at the annual meeting of the Sailors'- Home last evening. He said it now had the appearance of a good hotel, was comfortable, and was excellently run. In spite of the fact that substantial improvements had been made in the Home during the year there was still something to be done in the matter of entertainments. There was a lack of these, and he hoped it would be possible to organise indoor games on a larger scale. Referring to the religious side of the Home, he said the board_of trustees could not of its own volition carry on that task, which had been delegated to the British Sailors' Society and the united churches. . Reference was made to the proposal whereby the Mission to Seamen would carry on its work on the Sailors' Home site. Although the agreement had not yet been finally negotiated, Mr. Sanders said he was hopeful that a successful issue would shortly be announced. The Rev. E. C. Budd deplored the disgraceful appearance of the mission hall adjacent to the home. He reminded the trustees that religious teaching was » fundamental part of the work of the institution, and would have to be performed, even if the arrangements W train with the Mission to Seamen failed. Votes of thanks were passed to the British Sailors' Society and the late missioner (Mr. A. W. Benton), and to the horn surgeon (Dr. D. -ST. W. Murray). The excellent work done by Mr. and Mrs. H. Bailey, manager and manageress, was cordially acknowledged. Mr. Sanders was re-elected for a third term of office as president, and other officers elected were: Vice-president, Mr. W. Tailby; council, Captain C. Little, Rev. E. C. Budd, Mr. J. Trevethick, Mr. G. R. Magee, Mr. E. H. Potter, Mr. ET. Michaels and Mr. D. B. Patterson, with the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, and the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, Mr. M. H. Wynyard, as ex-officio members.
