An action that would have passed unnoticed but for a grateful mother was fittingly rewarded at the Boy Scouts' ball last evening, when Patrol-leader Eric Reynolds, of the Ist Whangarei Troop of Boy ScoutSj was presented with a gilt cross, the second highest award a scout can receive for acts of bravery. About 18 months ago a little "id was bathing in Taurikura Bay, Whano-arei harbour, when she got into difficulties. But for the action of Reynolds in rescuing her she would have been drowned. Her mother communicated with Scout headquarters, and the local troop took the matter up. Finally the approval of the Chief Scout, General Baden-Powell was obtained for the awarding of a oilt cross for gallantry. " ' to The Mayor, Mr. W. Jones, in phmincr the, cross on- Patrol-leader Reynolds' tunic, expressed the opinion that such actions as his were a very strong recommendation of the Scout movement, in which many useful crafts were taught but none so valuable as life-savin"- ° '
