MID-CANTERBURY HOTELS.

LICENSES REFUSED

FULL COURT'S RULING AWAITED,

:(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, Friday.

. Four applications for licenses for hotels were rpfused by the newlyappointed Mid-Canterbury Lincensing Committee at Leeston to-day. The committee heard evidence and legal argument.

The chairman, Mr. H. A. Young, S.M., giving the committee's decision, said the committee was not satisfied that it had power by law to grant the applications, which would therefore have to be refused. He expressed the hope, however, that the applicants would bring the matter before the Supreme Court or the Full Court. The licensing district of Ashburton, formerly a "dry" district, has now been included in Mid-Canterbury, which legally is a "wet" district, although in fact nearly half of it, that part which was formerly in Ashburton, is "dry."
