FILTHY MATTER.
SENT THROUGH POST.
MAN FINED THE MAXIMUM.
Charles Coward pleaded guilty at the Police Court this morning to a charge of sending filthy matter through the post. Chief Detective Hammond said Coward was informed that payment was due on a promissory note which a financial firm had discounted for him. He returned the firm's letter, with filthy matter smeared over it.
"It was rather a stupid thing for my client to have done," said Mr. Singer. Coward, he said, did not want to be mixed up in the transaction, which was really not his. Coward paid the amount for other persons. The complainant had already sent a registered ■ letter to Coward, who received it after payment had been made. The next day when he received the letter he thought it was an extra demand and became very annoyed.
"It was a dirty, filthy trick, and he's fined the maximum, £20 and costs £4 14/," said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.
