WAIUKU RAILWAY.
NOT TO BE ABANDONED. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WAIUKU, this day. Business people and residents at Waiuku have been apprehensive about the clo ing of the branch railway from Pacrata. They had been concerned over the matter since the Prime Ministers regarding *X%S?X.y o-eneral was made • public. The railwaj £ Waiuku was estimated to cos PSO 000 but as it was constructed durhS the war period the amount spent was nearer £220,000. It was represented r+ha Mmister of Lands (the Hon. G. W Forbes last evening that the people of the district were of the opinion tha, thev were expected to support the lailvay so that it would pay interest on 5,7 capital spent. They, considered, howeve?, that under the circumstances Tits construction the line should only be expected to pay interest on about half he capital cost. It was earnestly hoped that the Government would not "top the service because it did not pay interest on the whole amount Mr Forbes told the deputation that there' was no present likelihood of the line beintr closed. Ho did not think flu. sta~e had been reached when services would''"have to be stopped on branch ailways.
