TROTTING.

TE AROHA TROTTING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING, APRIL. 20. HANDICAP? FOR SATURDAY WEEK. Th<- f"llowin? handicaps l hßvp bppn dpclared by Mr. O. E. Goosman for events t.> decided at the Tp Aroha Trotting Club> meeting on Saturday, April 20: —

THE HAMBLETONIAN STAKE.

I Four year* ago the Trotting Horse- | breeders' Association decided to initiate ! a. cla?.-ic for three-year-old? to rival the world-famed Kentucky Derby. The wealthy breeding establishments and owners came at it like water, and the first event came off in 1926. The association having no course of its own called for bids from the various ra-ce tracks and fairs, as the agricultural shows are known in America, and the successful bidder was the immensely wealthy New York State Fair, which bid 8000 dollars ( £1600). The fee paid by the N.Y. State Fair was added to the stake, which amounted to the immense sum of 85,000 dollars ( £17,000). . Since then the N.Y. State Fair has obtained the race each year, and it was not thought such a wealthy body would allow itself to be outbid this year, but to everybody's surprise a new Richmond came into the field in the shape of the Kentucky Horse Breeders' Association, who bid 10,000 dollars (£2000) and obtained the privilege. It is perhaps only in the correct order of things that the biggest American stake should be raced for in Kentucky, known the world throughout bs the blue grass country. Kentucky contains many of the biggest horse-breeding establishments, both galloping and trotting, in America. Every schoolboy ha* heard of the famous Kentucky galloping Derby, for whenever an aristocratic racing family in novel or movie ha* been on the verge of ruin it has been saved by winning the Kentucky Derby. The Hambletonian Stake -will therefore this Year take its place alongside others of * Kentucky's great trots—the Kentucky Futurity, the Transylvania, the Walnut Hall Cup and others. The meeting is fixed for October next, and is stated to promise the greatest trotting carnival the world has yet seen.

Mr. J. Kennedy, who rode his own tors®, Fin-trader, in the Arden Trot, run at Middlemarch on Saturday, says "Sentinel" in the "Otago Witness," $b a veritable veteran of the saddle, as he was ridinjr in the days when the late S. Waddel, H. Goodman, D. O'Brien and [others of that day were to the fore. Mr. Kennedy is beyond the three-soore and | ten pargin, but ha clainw- to bfi jna Wta&Jfr - - 4. 9m.-
