BAY OF ISLANDS SEAT.
BY-ELECTION TO-MORROW.
CLOSE RESULT EXPECTED,
LABOUR FOR MR. RUSHWORTH.
(By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") WHAXGAREI, this day,
The Bay of Islands by-election has been fought very strenuously indeed. Both sides have made every effort to succeed and neither has left anything undone which might mean the winning of votes. Mr. Allen Bell, having represented the "Bay" for the past six years, is well known. During the time he was the choice of the electors he carried out his Parliamentary duties with distinction and with general benefit to his constituency. He has been an assiduous worker at all times, not only during periods when Parliament was in session, but also before and afterwards. He periodically visited all parts of his constituency in order to keep his knowledge of the requirements of the electorate up to date. During the present campaign he has spoken in a large number of districts, and apparently has received a thoroughly good hearing at every meeting. Mr. H. M. Rushworth, the Country party's candidate, has created a very favourable impression. He, like Mr. Bell, has also been well and favourably received at the various meetings he has addressed. He is pledged to support Sir Joseph Ward so long as the United Government legislates in a manner approved by the Country party. In the absence of an official Labour candidate, he is receiving the support of the Labour party. Both parties express themselves sanguine as to the resiilt, but the general belief throughout the constituency is that the result will be close.
