HUMAN SKULLS FOUND.
UNEARTHED IN QUARRY.
(By Telegraph.—Owu Correspondent.)
DUNEDIN, this day
Three, human skulls and a number of bones were found at the North Spit, where the Harbour Board is opening a new quarry to obtain more stone for building up the mole. The steam ■excavator, in removing sand, disclosed the entrance to a low tunnel-like cave. At the entrance of it two human skulls and a mimber of bones were, uncovered and about 30ft away another skull was found at the base of the cliff. One of the skulls is larger than tlio other. The two, although discoloured from burial, are sufficiently well preserved to show that death had not resulted from any fracture of the skull. In one case the lower jawbone was complete, and although it N was considerably decayed every tooth remained in place. A Maori burial place probably existed where the skulls were found.
