WELLINGTON", Monday.
The headmaster of the Mount Cook School, Mr. F. L. Combs, in an address at a meeting of the Wellington School Committees' Association this evening, said: "I defy anyone to show in regard to children or university students that French has any real value to any more than a very small proportion. Not more than 1 per cent benefit by the learning of French. It is criminal waste for which the authorities should be brought to book. They should be required to show the practical value of its teaching."' Mr. Combs also condemned the teaching of Latin and mathematics as utility subjects. He said he thought the minority report of the School Syllabus Revision Committee grappled properly vrith the problem.
