JUDGE HOOTED.

j ANGRY TIMBERMEN. Union Fined £1000 On Strike Charge. UGLY INCIDENT. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) MELBOURNE, March 1. Mr. Justice Lukin, in the Arbitration Court to-day, fined the Timber Workers' Union the maximum of £1000 for "doing something in the nature of a strike." There was no appearance of the union officials. Evidence was given that notices of a provocative character were posted about in mills calling on the men employed there to strike, also describing Mr. Justice Lukin's award as a most infamous one and charging his Honor with legalising slavery. A hostile demonstration was made outside the Court by 2000 strikers, who vigorously hooted the judge and shouted threatening and insulting words. A strong police cordon barred all the doors. The position took an ugly turn, but the police triumphed. Free labour was engaged by the millowners at Geelong to-day to handle a large shipment of hardwood. Police protection was provided.

"BLACK FRIDAY."

36 PITS CEASE OPERATING. SYDNEY, March I. Th* coalminers at 25 pits in Newcastle and Maitland ceased work to-day in accordance with the owners' notices. Tools and ponies were taken out of the mines. The aggregate wages loss per week will be £60,000. The occasion has been described as "black Friday."
