PENNANT BOWLING.

A CLOSE FINISH. HELENSVILLE IN THE LEAD. (By TRUNDLER.) More than the usual interest is being taken ia the last round of the pfennkUt matches this afternoon, On accotaht of the commanding lead held by Helensville in one section. Having won everything so far, except one match and a tie* they enter the last round with the high percentage of 51.2.1, and this aftetftoon's results are made all the more interesting from the fact that they meet Carlton, their nearest comptitors, QOw on 63.12. If Helensville lose one match and tie the other, they will be on 70 per cent, and Carlton would need to win all their remaining 18 matches to reach this percentage. This is absolutely unthinkable, so the only chance for Carlton 16 win the section is to win both their matches aaginst Helensville, bringing the latter down to 65 per cent. To even reach 05 per cent Carlton will need to win 14J matches in all to tie with Helensville, and 15 wins are required in order to secure the section. They did thife in the round before last, so It '#il! be seen that a win for Carlton is stiU theoretically possible. The result of this interesting finish will be published in tfcte 8 pOrte Edition. By a coincidence the two leading clubs also meet each other in section B, and that makes their meeting interesting too, | although not so dramatic as in section A. Mount Eden are on 62.50 per cent, and Becky Nook on 61.25, and if these' two clubs get an even run, and thn's destroy each other's chances, it Will give l Dominion Road an opportunity te efip in, although now only on 57.50. Of coulee, there is also a chance for Otahuliu to get to the top, as they are on 5t>.25, and will only need to repeal, lit the expense of Ellersiie, their great performance in December, when «they got throujjl. without a loss. West End still have a lighting chance, as they stand at 55 pi r cent, and are putting their whole strength against Devohport. The party to tour Taranaki will leave the C.P.O. to-morrov7 morning (at t.16. Late entries bring the number up to about 40, and travelling will be timed so a3 to reach New Plymouth to-mor-row evening. It will not be necessary for those living in southern suburbs to go to the bottom of Queen Street, as stops will be made at the Symohds Street end of the Grafton Bridge, the Newmarket Post Office, and the Onehnnsra Post Office. Friends of the tourists are notified that the official headquarters of the party will be the Criterion Hotel at New Plymouth, and telegrams to that address will reach them up to rteit fVlday evening.
