IS IT GENUINE?

FATAL FLIGHT RECALLED. LETTER SIGNED "SCOTTY." "CANT LAND. OH HELP!" (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Wellington, this day. Half-buried in silt on the bank of Pelorus River, Messrs. J. S. and O.S. Bayne, of Wellington, while on a tramping holiday, found a bottle containing the following message:—"Can't land. Oh help.—(Signed) Scotty." It evidently came, or purported to have come, from Hood and Moncrieff, the airmen who were lost in their attempt to fly the Tasman. On their return to Wellington, Messrs. Bayne communicated with Messrs. McLeod and Lesher, two personal friends of Mr. Moncrieff, and also with Mr. McNicol, promoter of the flight. Asked if he thought the message genuine, Mr. McLeod said the signature was very similar to that contained in a letter he had received from Scotty, but personally he did not think it genuine.
