COASTAL SURVEY.

MOEBAXI TO CAPE SAUXDERS.

ESSENTIAL TO PORT CHALMERS

(By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.")

DUNEDIN, this day,

Following on the Harbour Board's private deputation to the Hon. J. G. Cobbe (Minister of Marine) and Mr. G. C. Godfrey (Under-Secretary of the Marine Department) there is every reason to believe that a coastal survey from Moeraki to Cape Saundera will shortly be undertaken. A new proposal was made to the Minister by a deputation at Auckland, when he stated that he was favourably impressed. The Harbour Board will be called upon to •upply a tug and crew, while the Government will provide survey experts. The board is now awaiting a written reply from the Minister. The coastal •nrvey is a most essential worTc, as the Harbour Board i» spending some £100,000 on the reinstatement of the mole at the heads, and the drift of sand which has caused concern to the board *nd ite officials over a long period of years has never been determined. The board has been agitating for a coastal emrey for several years, but the past Government held that the expense would be too great. The present agitation has had the support of many of the local and public bodies of Otago as Ming » vital question affecting the development of the harbour.
