DARING BURGLARY.

SAFE BODILY REMOVED.

FROM TE AWAMUTU SHOP.

DISAPPEARS ON A VEHICLE

AX UNSUCCESSFUL SEARCH

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

TE AWAMUTU, this day

A daring burglary wis committed here early on Sunday morning. When an employee visited Mr. J. Middlebrook's butcher's shop about 9.,'J0 a.m. yesterday he discovered that a safe, weighing about sc\vt, was mi sing. The police were immediately advised but search failed to locate the safe It is thought the perpetrators of the robbery wenj familiar with the shop, as usually a large amount of money is deposited in the safe on Saturdays, but fortunately Mr. Middlebrook took notes and cheques home on this occasion, leaving only £15 in silver. It is a mystery how the safe was removed without " eovery, as Mr. and Mrs. Jeffs live immediately abovo the shop, while the post oifice exchange adjoins Mr. Middlebrook's premises. Neither Mr. Jeff nor the, night operator heard anything unusual.

It is thought at least three men were implicated, as the safe was apparently carried some distance before being placed on a vehicle. The district has been searched over a wide area, but so far th 2 safe is still missing.

It is believed that entrance was effected some time after 1 a.m. on Sunday by a back door and the safe taken away on a hand truck to a back street, where it was loaded to a motor truck.
