HIGHWAY DEVIATION.

DEPUTATION CRITICISED.

ORITRT RESIDENTS INDIGNANT

PROGRESS LEAGUE FORMED,

A largely-attended meeting of Drury residents was held yesterday to discuss the published report of a deputation to the Auckland Automobile Association, and also to the Highways Board, purporting to represent the Drury Ratepayers' Association, which was unknown to those present.

Indignation was expressed at the statement that the petitions were alleged to have come from Drury residents. It was stated that not one of those present, consisting of practically the whole of the business community of Drury, had been aware that the petition was even in circulation, and no signatures had been obtained from any of those present. It was unanimously resolved to form an association to be known as the Drury Progress League, with Mr. W. J. Brooks as president, and Mr. Enos Pegler as secretary, together with a committee of six, who were authorised by the meeting to form a deputation to the Main Highways Board and the Auckland Automobile Association to protest against the deviation asked for, which would have the effect of isolating the whole township, and, furthermore, it was considered that the main road as at present constituted was in every way preferable and could be reconstructed at infinitely less cost than the proposed deviation.
