SPEED FOR MOTORING.

LIMITS IN HATTRAKI COUNTS'.

PROTEST BY ASSOCIATION

(By Telegraph.—Own Correepondent.)

THAMES, this day.

At a meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council, over which Mr. E. L. Walton presided, a protest was received from, the Auckland Automobile Association against the motor speed limit of 35 miles an hour, with a restriction of 20 miles through townships. Mr. E. Mahoney, the council's clerk, stated that the limit had been fixed by the council, some of whom were experienced motorists, to govern special conditions operating in the Hauraki Plains county, where nearly all the roads were one-way routes, unusually high in the centre and bounded on both sides by deep drains. The townships' limit of 20 miles applied to stretches of half a mile on narrow highways used by school children several times daily.. The clerk pointed out that the council's traffic inspector was fully competent to discriminate between reasonable and dangerous speeds. He intended to curb, not the ordinary motorist, but the occasional reckless driver.
