MOBRINSVIIXE. The Morrinsville Fire Brigade will be represented ut the United Fire Brigades' demonstration at Hokitlka at the end of the month by Foreman T. Goble, Driver E Origg, Senior Brunchman J. At a meeting of the county council mlvice was received from" the Puhlic Works Department in connection with the flooding of the main highway at Kirikiri stating that it proposed to straighten bonds in the Kirikiri Creek by means of a drag-line dredge. The Minister of Lands advised that he was obtaining a report on the possibility of opening for settlement tbo unoccupied lnnds of the Hauraki Peninsula, with a view to personally inspecting the peninsula at an parly date. In connection with the proposed extension of a water supply to Kopu the clerk and engineer were authorised to proceed with necessary works and the indenting of pipes. * The county council proposes to borrow £11,000 for the installation of a freshwater supply scheme to serve well settled areas between Puriri and Hikutuin. TATJRAXGA. At tho monthly meeting of the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce. Mr. O T Wright presiding, a letter was received from the Divisional Superintendent of Railways. Auckland. stating that traffic between Tauranga and Taneatua was not sufficient to warrant a daily train from Tauranga to Taneatua and back in the meantime. The chairman and secretary reported that guarantees towards the expense of running a Winter Show and Carnival were being freely signed. The Mayor is to be asked to call n public meeting, with a view to furthering the project. A sailing race for seven-footers, the final for a trophy, resulted in a win for I Young's Ixl, with M. Cambie's Bovril second and Ron Pemberton's Dottrell third ' The trophy was won by Dottrell with seven points, Ixl scoring: six points and Pal and Bovril four points each. WHAKATANE. The Hon. J. B. Donald. PostmasterGeneral and Minister in Charge of Telegraphs, passed through Whakatane. and met a deputation from the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Donald said it, seemed to him that Whakatane had progressed sufficiently to have a slot telephone, and he would make further inquiries into the matter when in Wellington. In regard to the extension of the Whakatane telephone area to include Tarawera, Mr. Donald said it was a question as to whether it would be more economical to connect the Te Teko subscribers with the Whakatane Exchange than continue to maintain the Te Teko exchange. Tho Department required to j make the service pay its way. and if a ' snrplus resulted from the working of the telephone system the Department would give the people the benefit in the way of better telephone facilities. He referred the matter to the acting-postmaster, who said that in the near future the honrs of the Te Teko exchange may be extended and that would to a certain extent meet the requirements of the people. Mr. Donald said he Would hear the matter in raind and do anything within reason to meet the' wishes of those concerned. i
