HOWICK AFFAIRS.

HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE. HEAVY ANNUAL COST. A meeting of the Howick Road Board was presided over by Mr. J. Crawford. Mr. H. H. Bushel! was granted three months' leave of absence. It was decided to shift a street light in Ridge Road, at the request of a ratepayer who offered to defray the coat of removal. Objection to the carting of sand from the foreshore in Cockle Bay was made by the Cockle Bay Estate Company. The board decided to join the Local Bodies' Association from April 1. The clerk reported that the traffic tallies taken on the Panmure-Howick Road showed a considerable increase in traffic, and there were now almost a thousand vehicles a day. He also reported that the cost of maintenance of the Howick portion of the highway, a section of miles, was £728 for" the last 12 months.

Fees for the registration of dogs in the district were fixed at 2/6 for working dogs and of- for others.
