SAFETY OF MAILS.
CONSTERNATION IN DUNEDIN
STOCK EXCHANGE DEBATE,
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
DUNEDIN, tliis day
The theft of mail bags 011 the steamer Wahine and other -similar instances has caused a certain amount of consternation in the minds of business men who frequently send valuable documents from city to city by means of registered post. These documents would be of 110 value to a thief, being non-negotiable, but should they be destroyed it might mean the loss of hundreds of pounds to the sender. This side or the question applies particularly to share brokers, and the matter was considered by members of the Dunedin Stock Exchange, when a very serious view was taken of it.
It was thought that the Stock Exchange, associated banks and Chamber of Commerce should combine to bring pressure to bear on the authorities to see that better provision is made in taking care that mails are not subject to interference.
