An announcement has been made by the Minister of Lands, the Hon. (,'. W. J'oHm's, concerning the area of land at J'eilding recently purchased by the (lovrrnnicnt in connection with its land Settlement policy. Mr. Forbes said the Government had, fin the recommendation of the Dominion J.anrl Purchase Hoard, arranged for the ■purchase of. about 844 acres of Mr. lv. Jj. Levin's well-known "Westella" property, which is situated three miles jToin Feilding and seven miles from I'almerston North. Mr. Levin wished to retain "the homestead block and buildings. The area purchased is practically all level, a small portion being undulating, and the soil is of a rich, loamy liature, varying from alluvial silt on phingle formation to a heavy clay subftoil.

"The land ia admirably suitable for dairying anrl is served by several dairy factories, including the Glaxo factory," liaid the Minister. "Permanent water •will be available on most of the subdivisions, and where there is no permanent water a supply can be otbained by winking to a depth of from 12ft to 16ft. The Crown will obtain possession of the urea purchased on April .°>o ne\t, and in the meantime the survey and roading •will proceed after a careful investigation has been made as to the manner in ■which the land should be subdivided. JT'hero are three on the area Required, consequently three of the subdivisions will be served with dwellings.

"Jt is anticipated that tho block will "bo divided into from 10 to 12 farms, end the land will be placed on the market about the time the Crown obtains possession, namely, April 30. The land Required is all in grass, with the exception of some small plantations, and the pasture is excellent. The exiting fences are in pood order, and will in the [majority of cases be used as subdivieional boundaries. The surrounding district is practically given up to dairying, and without question this new area will (be a valuable adjunct to that industry."
