KING LOUIS XL FASHIONS.

Mis* Margaret McKenzie. Ainohau Street, has returned from a holiday spent at Auckland and Waiheke Island. Archdeacon F. W. Chatterton and Mrs. Chatteiton, Hineinoa Street, have returned from Nelson. Mis- Ethel Wilson, of Khyber Pass. Auckland, is spending a few days at "The Australia." Rotorua. Miss K. Campbell has returned to Rotorua from New Plymouth. Mr. and Mrs. \V. J. Drysdale have returned from Auckland. Miss 1). C'orlett has returned from a visit to Milford. Mrs. Russel Gardner and family have returned from a holiday spent at Cheltenham. Mrs. E. Westlake, of Te Puke, is on a short visit to her mother. Mrs. C. R. Tapper. "The Bungalow." Mrs. J. Tapper, of Matamata. is on a short visit to Rotorua. Mr. and Mrs. R. Ross, of East Tamaki. who have been visiting Rotorua. have left for Waitomo Caves and the south. Mrs. Smith, jnr.. Whaka Road. has returned from a holiday spent in Wellington.

The annual concert held in connection with the Rotorua Bowling Club's annual tournament, was held at the Tea Kiosk, Government Gardens, when there was a large and appreciative audience. The president of the local chili. Mr. A. H. Foggin, presided. During the excellent programme a collection was taken up in aid of the benevolent work of the Rotorua Women's Club, the amount obtained being £22 19/9. The singing of the National Anthem was followed by an overture by the Arawa Symphony Orchestra, recitations by Professor Maxwell Walker. Miss Hooper. Mr. Hodgson. Miss P. Galbraith. Mr. I. S. Rowc: flute solos by Mr. Leslie Rainger. of Auckland; pianoforte solo by Mrs. Knaggis; vocal duet by Misses K. Hall and T. Giesen; humorous stories told by Mr. Malone. of Australia, and Mr. Adeane. of Auckland; songs sung bv Mrs. Sheriff. Mr. T. Hill, of Wellington. Mr. A. French. Mr. Thomas. Mr. Harry Woolley, of Auckland, played the accompaniments.

A successful social evening was organised by the members of the Rotorua Croquet Club, and held in the Tea Kiosk, Government Gardens, on Thursday evening, when there was an attendance of GO. The room was effectively decorated with the club's colours, white*daisies and red zinnias, also orange tiger lilies. The. evening was devoted to bridge and progressive 500. The winners of the bridge tournament were: Mrs. Cornes and Mr Koefoed. The 500 tournament prizes were won by Mrs. Blencowe. Mr. J. Williamson, the booby prize by Miss V. St. Clair. After a dainty supper the president. Mrs. J. Halkett. presented to the winners the prize won during the recent tournament, and heartilv conorratulated Mrs. Keys and Mr< White, who took first prize foi tor the doubles croquet competition, and Mrs. Coutts and Mrs. Hilton the runners-lip. Quaint dressing was displayed in the ■•Vagabond King," the bright musical comedy which appeared at His Majesty's Theatre la-t evening. Velvets, lames and heavily-jewelled trimmings, a feature of that period, were there in plenty. Miss Strella Wilson's first entrance was in beige bengaline. the very high waist and hem being outlined in gold thread. The voluminous cape and hood, which fell in sweeping folds and rested on the ground, was of jade green panne velvet. The second frock was of ivory panne velvet, bordered with emerald green and jewels. A Juliet cap of pearl- was worn. The third act frock was a metal lame brocade, inset with sapphires and pearls. The silver lame and pearl headdress had mauve and blue flowing georgette veils from the highciowned hat. Black velour was chosen for the last frock, silver filagree lace being inset on the skirt, and facing the flowing hem. The coat had wide bands of silver lame, the high headdress of silver having flowing veils in steel grey and misty blue. Beatrice Kinrick's lirst entrance was in mole and beige panne velvet, with a quaint chapeau of blue tulle, hanging in many folds down her back. Many beautiful tones were used throughout the whole piece, the rebel chorus being picturesque in its tones of russetts. browns and fawns. Among the lirst night attenders were: Mrs. Collins", Mr-.
