SEA COAST ROAD.

WAIPU TO MAKGAWAL

SUGGESTED TOURIST ROUTE

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

"VYHAXGAREI, this day.

Mr. Murdoch, M.P., waylaid the Highway-; Board, en route to Auckland, and persuaded members to divide forces and view the sea coast road between Waipu and Mangawai. After doing so the board was met by a deputation of settlers at Mangawai. who urged that tiiat section be declared a tourist route , . Mr. E. Bellinghain, on behalf of the settlers, referred to the very heavy trafftc over the route by motorists and tourists, generally, and he stressed the scenic points of the gorge, bays and beaches en route. He also suggested a deviation from the present difficult grades at the Mangawai end, and advocated a level

road from Mangawai embankment to Henry's bridge. This, he said, would also afford access for farmers beyon-'i Tara and from Mangawai Heads.

Mr. Jull said he recognised the importance of this route, but advised the deputation that the board was already committed to a heavy programme of expenditure on the main highway. If the board deviated from that policy it would hinder progress and delay completion. The district engineer agreed to discuss the question with the member for the district.
