OTAHUHU CLUB

SUMMER MEETING, FEB. 23 AND 27.

SATURDAY WEEK'S HANDICAPS. The following handicaps har» been deeared by Mr. C. E. Goosman for events to be decided on the first day r>t the Otahuhu Trotting Club'e summer meeting, which opens at Alexandra Part on Saturday, February 23 : —

GOULBURN DERBY

WON BY MY CHUM

To Goulburn belongs the honour of staging the first trotting and pacing Derby in New South Wales. The starters in the Goulburn Derby, raced on February 2, numbered 24 —a fine response, considering it was the State's initial classic for three-year-olds.

As anticipated, the trotters' division was easy money for S. M. Ball's Floriie Lucy, who won from Bazil Vane and Monte Lincoln, in 2.37 2-5. How easy may be judged from the fact that Florrie Lucy, a* the last Richmond meeting, won over one mile and a-half at a 2.34 gait, opposed to a field of all-aged trotters. Florrie Lucy is by the imported sire Wilbur Lou. a world's champion himself as a yearling trotter, and sire of a world's yearling acer. The first division of the pacers' race was won by Hurley Burley from Flying Betel and 'Royal's-Brother, in 2.22 2-5. The second division was won by My Chum from John Dixie and Bronze Derby in 2.21. Hurley Burley started favourite for the run-off, with My Chum at a a point better. It proved an easy win for My Chum by four lengths, in 2.24. The* winner, a bay gelding by the deceased sire Dixie Derby from Miss Kemp, was bred and is owned and trained by Roy Roach. John Dixie is also by Dixie Derby, out of (iwenwood. He was started at Victoria Park a fewweeks back, hut spoilt his chance by standing on the mark. Winning a Derby was no new experience to Roy Roach, as he won the Melbourne Derby of 1927 with Lulureen, in exactly the same time as My Chum won at Goulburn—2.2l.
