MOTOR CAR SMASHED.
DRIVER SITU. HOPEFUL. ' FIXED FOR DRUNKENNESS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) STRATFORD, this day. '"When a man wants to drive hi« car. which is smashed to bits, that is not being sensible." declared Constable Carroll, giving evidence against John Nicholson, of Hawera, who was charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a motor car. The constable said he found the car jammed against an electric power pole. The driver was sitting in the car intoxicated. Witness told him he would be arrested, and he replied that he could drive the car better when he was drunk than when he was sober. There were six bottles of whisky in the car. Nicholson still wanted to drive the car, in spite of its damaged condition, but it had to be towed away. Defendant, in evidence, stated that his greasy boot, fresh from a hay paddock, had slipped from the brake pedal. That had prevented him pulling up when the danger of running into another car threatened, so he had to crash into the pole. "You are a respectable farmer, but unfortunately this class of offence is often committed by respectable people,*' said Mr. Salmon, S.M. 'You will be fined £2.5 and costs, and your license cancelled until June, 1930."
