REVIVING INDUSTRY.

RAISIifG Or STEERS.

VALUE TO PASTURES.

While admittedly the dairy cow has made the Waikato, run cattle have also played an important part in its development. With increased prices for beef now ruling, considerably more steer calves are being reared, and the future of the beef market in the district should be assured.

An inducement to pursue this branch of the dairying industry lies in the fact that as much as £6 has been paid this season for yearling calves of good quality. With such satisfactory prices as this being realised it is obvious it will pay handsomely to grow and fatten cattle, thereby improving the carrying capacity of the farms, and reviving an industry that has languished greatly since the slump. fertilisers have increased wealth of Waikato pastures since its rise from the virgin state, but the original system employed for breaking in country was to turn out run cattle, and then bring them in to better class pastures to be finished off. During the past four or five years, however, there hag not been a great deal in this class of farming,, and consequently a number of farms have depreciated in value. Well grazing down by cattle improves the sWard of the grass, but let run to seed, pastures will rapidly deteriorate.
