A BRIEF REVIEW.

MISS STOCJCLEY'S FINE SWIM _ When such a.liigh standard of swim mtligf" was to be seen, it wasuot siifv, prising tb»t another capacity houe-< filled the tepid-baths last evening. One disappointing feature of last night's programme was that several of the eliam-! pioiiship, events were poorly supported. A large number of 'Ihoße who had entered failed to mate! an'appearaifee. Taken: alt round the championships could scarcely have been a greater hucmm. iwliiidaf biu been excellent

and the arrangements were absolutely complete. The centre officials worked hard and got the programme of the two nights through without a hitch.

Another year finds Miss Ena Stockley swimming as well as ever. Her time when she regained the 100 yds title from Miss Boris Magee, was only 2-5s slower than her Australian and New Zealand record of 05 3-ss, which she put up in a race against Miss Mariecheu, Wehselau (Hawaii) on March 16, 1925. Had she not been handicapped "by a bad cold she may have made new figures. If Miss Stockley can maintain her present form she should break the record in the Dominion championship event.

Although defeated, Miss Magee has no reason to reproach herself, as she made a splendid effort to overhaul Miss Stockley. The Parnell lady's time would be about the same -as she registered in winning the title last year.

It is a difficult matter to account for (1. Bridson's loss of form, as his quarter* mile time, 5m 325, was much slower than that which he was generally expected to 40. His showing has been the biggest disappointment of the meeting, for it was thought that he would play havoc with the 220 yds and 440 yds New Zealand records.

The veteran, J. Enwright, swam a well-judged race to finish second to Bridson. R. dc Loree was unable to reproduce his form of the previous evening and there was a murmur of surprise when he withdrew with 40yds to go.

Some first-class racing was seen in the 220 yds ladies' championship, which resulted in another splendid victory for the holder, Miss Dorothy Grant. Miss Stockley, who covered the distance in much better time than she has ever done, was the pace-maker for five laps, after which, "mainly on account of her exertions hi. the 100 yds race, she tired, and Miss Grant slipped up to win a welljudged race in the good time of 2m 54 2-ss. Miss Grant has shown wonderful improvement! since last year's race, as her time on this occasion was 7 3-5s faster.

After her thrilling race with Miss Grant in . the, 440 yds championship on Monday evening, Miss Cnainpion was expected to put up another fine fight with the champion over the furlong. However, she failed to rise to the occasion and was never at any stage oftbo raw troublesome to her rivals. Like Bridson; she may, have had a temporary lapse in form.

Brilliant Miss .Peggy Robertson 'was the only starter in the Js2oyds intermediate girls' championship and she again demonstrated her undoubted prowess by travelling over the 1 distance like a small motor boat in the good time of 3m 3s. As this was her first swim over the furlong, indications point that she Will annex the New Zealand title, as her time is seconds better than any other girl in her class in the Dominion.

As usual, Fairgray had the easiest of victories in the l.~>oyds backstroke championship, but his time. 2m 0 2-ss, compared with his New Zealand record of lm 52 3-ss, is slow. He has poor prospects of regaining his New Zealand title from L. Moorehouse (Canterbury), unless he makes rapid improvement within the next ten deys.

The promising Whangarei boy, A. Walker r secured his second success at the. meeting by winning the 220 yds junior boys' championship in the highly creditable time of 3m 12s. He is the first Whangarei swimmer to be included in an Auckland team.

A pretty little swimmer from the Mount Eden Club, Miss Sylvia Orange, scored a good victory in the 100 yds junior girls' e,vent in the fast time of 78 3-ss. The second girl, Miss M. Elworth, also swam well and troubled Misa Grange all the way. The styles of both these girls could t)e vastly improved. Miss J. Webster was also the only starter in the 50yds junior girls' breaststroke championship, but paced by the intermediate champion, Miss J. Thomson, rwhom she obviously made go all out, ihe swam delightfully to return the excellent time of 42 l-ss. Miss Webster, who .hails from Australia, should do well in the future, for this was the first time she had appeared in competition.

The 220 yds and 440 yds intermediate boy champion, L. Speight, shows plenty of promise and was an easy winner. He resides in Cambridge, but is- a member of the Parnell Club. He has been excluded from the local representative team, the Auckland Centre claiming that he is only eligible to represent the South Auckland Centre. If this is -the case Speight should not really have joined up with the Parnell Club.
