AUCKLAND CARNIVAL CONCLUDES.

SOME THRILLING CONTESTS

Again last evening- the concluding night of the Auckland swimming championships, there was some excellent racing at the Tepid Baths. Some of. the events produced thrilling contests and the big crowd of 1500 spectators cheered with great enthusiasm. The brilliant Ena Stockiey was in line form last evening and regained her 100 yards title by decisively beating the holder, Miss Doris Magee. The winner put up tine time, being only 2-os outside her own Australian and Auckland and New Zealand record. Clever trick diving, which was highly amusing, was performed by (i. Johnson, H. Neale, W. Hassan and W. Keesing. Results of championship and handicap events are:— 440 YARDS MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP. Title holder, G. Bridson. Auckland and N.Z. record, 0.24 2-0, D. P. Lindsay (Auckland). G. Bridson (Grammar) 1 3. Enwright (Waitomano 2 Also started: .1. de Loree (Mount Eden). Knright and Bridson were the cause of four false starts, but with the nfth attempt the 'men were sent away together. Bridson and de Loree turned together at the end of the first hundred, with Enwright only a yard away. With 200 yards covered. Bridson began to show out in front and with each lap made his position even more secure. De .Loree- retired at 400 yards and Bridson won by 16 yards from Enwright. Time, 5.32—an Auckland record. Miss Stockiey at once forged to the front leading Miss Magee by a yard at the end of the first lap. She slightly increased her lead over the next section and when she turned for the last time had over a yard margin, Finishing strongly. with apparently a i ittle in- hand. Miss Stockiey. went on to win by two yards from Mis* Magee, with Miss Farquhar a similar distance away third. When the time wis recorded Miss Stockiey got quite an ovation. LADIES' 220 YARDS. Miss Stockiey began to'draw away, but amid excitement Miss Grant soon bridged the gap. With a lap to go they were on even terms, but Miss Grant began to draw out and went on to'win by three yards and retain her title. Miss Champion was three yards away, third.
