WHANGAREI HOSPITAL.

CONCESSION TO MINERS. INCREASE REFUSED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. The Whangarei Hospital Board to-day adopted the recommendation of the house committee that an up-to-date Xray plant be installed in the institution. At present all important cases -where photographic records are necessary are sent to Auckland as the existing plant is not highly efficient. The Hikurangi Miners' Medical Society sought by a deputation to secure an increase in the concession given to all friendly societies from 45 to 50 per cent. It was stated that all members of the society contributed to its funds and 100 per cent paid their dues. It was decided on the chairman's casting vote to refuse further concession.

The chairman had to use his casting vote again when the matter of the age under which patients should be charged as children was under discussion. Previously Mr. R. G. Hosking gave notice of motion to change the by-law by advancing the age from 12 to 13. An amendment that the age be raised to 14 was supported by five members. Mr. Hosking's motion was carried on the chairman's vote.

Twelve applications, mostly from Auckland firms, were received for the position of the board's architect. Messrs. Owen and Morgan, of Whangarei, will be asked to wait upon the board at its next meeting to explain their terms. The board decided to send to the Hospital Association a remit urging the compulsory payment by wage-earners, through employers, to meet the cost of hospital treatment of such workers and families.
