OPERATIONS OP COUNCIL. MAINTENANCE OF ROADS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) TAURANGA, this day. Many matters of local interest were discussed at the meeting of the Tauranga County Council on Saturday.

A letter was read from the district engineer of the Public Works Department stating that the Main Highways Board had agreed to pay a £3 for JEI subsidy for the improvement of corners on the Kaimai Road, as well ae ordinary maintenance. The council decided to ask the Main Highways Board to employ the board's men on a portion of the Kaimai Road in the Tauranga County. Messrs. J. M. Darragh and W. F. Sinclair were appointed delegates to a meeting of the Bay of Plenty Development League, to be held at Tauranga this month.

The council resolved to invite the Minister of Lands, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, to visit the district, and also to make representations to him to make all Crown lands in the Tauranga County available for settlement.

Advice was received from the Minister of Marine, Hon. J. G. Cobbe, that he had referred to the Minister of Public Works, Hon. E. A. Ransom, the council's communication drawing attention to the possible danger of flooding of the Maketu township owing to the erosion of the. sandhills on the ocean beach, due to the action of the Kaituna River outlet. The council confirmed its resolution altering the boundaries of the Te Puna and Katikati Ridings, so as to take an area in the Aongatete district from Te Puna and add it to Katikati A letter was received from the district engineer in reference to the council s representations to the Main Highways Board, asking that it approve the recommendation of the No. 3 District Highways Council, that it accept a contribution of £10 per mile per annum from the local authorities toward the cost of maintaining and reconstructing the Tauranga-Rotorua direct road, The board had further considered the matter since its return to Wellington, but regretted that it was unable to grant more than tne usual rate of subsidy on this road. rf
