TWO MEN PLEAD GUILTY.
FORGERY OF RECEIPT

Enterpri>e on the part of two men in obtaining money from the Auckland Peturned Soldier*' Association by methods that were described as fraudulent, led to the appearance of John Arthur Mce r 31. and -lames Henry Xicoi, 4-_ at the Police Court thi= roorniuz btfore Mr. \V. R. McKean. S.M. On the application of Chief Detective. Hammond the two men were remanded until January 22 in order that further inquiries might be made by the police. The charges were brought that a sum of £2 2/ had been falsely obtained from Mr. K. H. Sharp, secretary of the A.R.S.A.. by represent in" that a certain receipt for £4 4/ was genuine. Both n:en pleaded guilty.
Mr. Hammond said the men were probnbly returned soldier?, and they had sought to n.ake good their claim upon the portion of the association's canteen funds which had been allocated for distribution in Auckland. The means adopted for as>i»ting returned men in financial difficulties ire-re thought the hest possible, but the two men charged had been observed forging a receipt, and it had been ascertained that the offcn<«a bad been going en for some time.
