fHE CLUB MATCHES.

PONSONBY GOES DOWN.

COLLAPSE OF UNIVERSITY.

There were several surprises in the play on Saturday afternoon, when the scrips of senior club matches that were started before the holidays was finished in hot, bright weather, and on wickets that were inclined to be liery. First excitement came at Eden Park, when Eden had declared after taking their score to 344 for seven, and University's iir.st rive wickets fell for 00. Though the rest of the side battled out a losing they did not make many runs, and the team was out a little after 5 p.m. for !)!>. Satisfied with the win on the first innings, Eden batted again to fill in time. Butler got live wickets for 32 runs, and Weir four for 17.

Probably greater interest marked the progress of the Ponsonby-Y.M.C.A. game, as it became apparent that the latter side was making a determined bid to catch the total of 244 put up by Ponsonby. With Bowley batting in attractive form at one end, Elliott hdned to put on r>o runs for fourth ■wicket, taking the score to 111, and Itiddollss partnered the professional for another r>o. Then Lyon and Bowley carried on to i24JS. when the hitter whs tjot rid of, after having made 133. Y.M.C.A. eventually got 26!», and the win. I'm ited Suburbs, after losing eight Wit ,<ets for 100, made a fighting finish that carried the score to 233. Martin being responsible for 140 in a free innings that had the Grafton bowling troubled.

At Devonport the home side, having made 252, had a battle royal with Parwli, who made a great bid and got ", 250, thus losing , the game by two runs. ' PONSONBY BEATEN.

* A feature of the game in which Y.M.C.A. defeated Ponsonby by a margin of 25 runs on No. 2 wicket at Eden Park was a fine three-figure score of 133 by Bowley, the Auckland Cricket Association's coach. When play started, the young men, with one wicket down for . 10, needed 235 to pass Ponsonby'e first innings' total. It was a stiff proposition, . hut Bowley, supported by Sutherland, Elliott, Riddolls and Lyon, kept the runs mounting, and the side finished the in- * nings 25 runs ahead of their opponents. ■ As there "was only half an hour to go, * Ponsonby did hot begin their second innings. p SHORE WIN BY A HEAD. ■ "With 254 runs for nine wickets on the board, North Shore declared, giving Parnell the whole of the afternoon in .which "to get t"he required number of Tuns. In losing the match by two runs the vieitors were unlucky. They only batted ten men, and it is probable that the extra bat would have turned the scales. The home team had just that element of luck, which enabled them, after dropping five catches, to scrape home. .P. Whitelaw, the ex-Grammar School player and Auckland rep., played a faultless innings for 91, and was ably backed up, in a sixth wicket stand, by Kissling. Scores:— . NORTH SHORE. Butie*.and G. L. Weir, who, incidentally, HtojMscpred for Eden with 91 not out, sSkred the bowling honours. Although 24S aliead, Eden did not try for an innings^gte/going to the crease again for the last hour of play. Scores :-X.«.
