ASSAULTED HIS WIFE.
EX-NAVY MAN GAOLED.
At the Police Court this morning, George Richard Martin denied charges of assaulting Rachel Skidmore and his wife, Catherine H. Martin; and also of using obscene language in a telephone box. According to the evidence arwised sraasked Miss Skidmore's face and struck his wife on the mouth, knocking her into the gutter. It was also 6aidd that he used a lot of bad language. He was stated to have had some drink.
Accused's story was that he had been away for seven months, and when be got back to Auckland a couple of days ago he was refused permission to see his child. He said his wife tripped over his foot, and he denied that eh struck her. Martin went on to say that he had been 14 years in the Navy, and as for the language he was said to have used, they would have been crimed for some of it, and he "\vas not in the habit of using such expressions. Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., imposed a sentence of seven days on the charge of assaulting' the wife, and on the others recorded a conviction.
