On account of the numerous thefts of cream and milk tokens in the Island Ray district, Constable Raker, in plain clothes, has been keeping patrol on a bicycle every morning. On Christmas morning. about ,>.:;o, ho saw a man acting sus-

piciously, and lie went to accost him. The man, Walter Richard Williams, a labourer, 00 years of age, with a young family of six children, ran awav.

The constable gave chase, but when he was a yard or two off Williams threatened him with an empty beer bottle, and then slnai; him. When the constable attempted to arrest him he resisted violently, and it was not till the assistance of other people was obtained that the man was handcuffed. He had in his possession three half-pint bottles and two quart bottles of fresh cream.

On arriving at the Police Station he complained of injuries, and it was found that he had two ribs broken. The police in Court to-day said injury might have been caused during the. struggle, which was a severe one. There were three charges against Williams, one of theft, one of assaulting the constable, and one of resisting arrest. He was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, and ordered to pay £1 1/, the doctor's fee, in • default seven days' additional imprisoui ment.
