YACHT DISABLED.
OCEAN RACE COMPETITOR.
WATRIKI MAKES COROMANDEL
CREW SAFE AND SOUND.
TWO DAYS AT TE KOUMA.
Considerable anxiety was felt in Auckland yesterday and this morning concerning the whereabouts of the yacht Wairiki, which left Auckland on Saturday afternoon as a competitor in the annual ocean race to Tauranga. The "Star" has ascertained that the yacht and her crew of five reached Coromandel at 10 o'clock this morning, safe and sound. When off Cape Corville about 2.30 a.m. on Sunday a shroud broke, and the vessel was turned round on another tack, when immediately the back-stay also gave way. Despite the crippled condition of the yacht, the crew managed to make Te Kouma on Sunday, and there the vessel remained for two days. This morning, having effected repairs, and considering that the relatives of those on board would be alarmed, the yacht was sailed to Coromandel, whence news of her safety was telephoned to Auckland.
The yacht is owned by Mr. S. Rhodes Speight, jeweller, of 251, Karangahape Road. The owner had with him his son, and Mr. J. Brannigan, of 96, Franklin Road, Ponsonby, and two others.
Other yachts competing in the race all arrived at Tauranga on Sunday. One of them sighted the Wairiki off the Noisies, but she was not seen again.
